Can I Send Flowers to Someone With Cancer?

When someone we care about is going through something difficult, we instinctively want to do something. For a long time, flowers have been a go-to expression of love and support, a bright bouquet that says, “I’m thinking of you.” But when someone is undergoing cancer treatment, flowers aren’t always the safest option.

During treatment, many patients have significantly reduced immune defenses. We commonly see this in treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted drug therapy, and others. While it can be different for each situation, depending on in-home treatment or hospital stays, it’s important to know when it’s safe. If you’d like to read in-depth about how cancer treatments affect the immune system and how the immune system functions, this Cancer Research UK page has great in-depth information.

When it comes to delivering flowers, something as small as bacteria or mold spores, which are harmless to most people, can pose a real risk to patients in chemotherapy and other cancer treatments. We’ve created a list of meaningful alternatives to a fresh bouquet of flowers, including silk flowers, lego flowers, and dried flowers. These options are not only safe for cancer patients, but last much longer than real flowers, forever!

Lego Flower Bouquet: If you’re looking for an alternative to silk or dried flowers, these Lego sets are a wonderful choice. The Pretty Pink Bouquet and the Wildflower Bouquet have a creative twist to a traditional bouquet, also creating a fun and hands-on experience! ($)

Dried Pressed Flowers In a Wooden Frame: Another alternative to silk flowers, this gift from Amazon provides a more organic, handcrafted feel. The preserved blooms create a simple yet meaningful display that honors nature in a lasting way. ($)

Zinnia & Roses Silk Flower Arrangement: Known to represent endurance and lasting friendship, zinnias carry a message of loyalty and strength. Combined with white roses, this arrangement from Petals reflects the comfort of knowing someone is standing beside you. ($$)

Faux Composed Hydrangeas: Though they can represent many things, hydrangeas are symbolic of heartfelt emotion and gratitude. This arrangement from Pottery Barn is a thoughtful and beautiful gift. ($$$)

Faux Ranunculus & Dahlia Floral Arrangement: This stunning arrangement from William Sonoma is handcrafted and has ranunculus and dahlias, flowers often associated with inner strength and grace. Together, they create a bouquet that is elegant and meaningful. ($$$$)
